“Laika” by the late, lamented Moxy Früvous. From the Bargainville album.
Because they’re Canadian, and there aren’t enough songs about her.
Or featuring the word “cloakrack.”
I saw Moxy Früvous live in the winter of 1993 on my first trip to Toronto and with it my first visit to Horseshoe Tavern. They had such a distinctive sound—smart, quirky and unadorned, with pitch-perfect harmony. “Gulf War Song” impressed upon me then and beautifully embodies still the spirit of the country I’d choose as my home a decade later.
Thanks, Dan.
