What the music industry never encouraged or even allowed was building an ecosystem around its product.

The Rock Band Network is a notable example of such an ecosystem, but driven by the technology — not music — industry. On its own, the the music industry has thwarted nearly every effort that would allow the artists it purports to represent to build audiences and generate revenue in creative, new ways. This has to change.
